If you live in Alaska or Hawaii and you’ve been shopping for an electric bike, I’m sure you’ve noticed many electric bike companies don’t offer to ship to Alaska and Hawaii but why is this? The main reason is due to the lithium Ion batteries that are used for electric bikes.

Since it’s only the batteries, regular bikes are typically able to ship to these areas with no problems.

Shipping by Plane

a plane

If you’ve ever been on a plane, you know what I’m talking about. When flying there’s a list of banned items for flying. There are the obvious ones like no knives, weapons, etc. and then there are the not so obvious items like lithium-ion batteries, e-cigs, and hoverboards. This is because they all contain lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries have been known to combust on planes.

Ground Shipping

So, in order to ship your e-bike, most companies use FedEx or UPS ground shipping. Obviously, since Hawaii is an island, you can’t just use standard ground shipping to get your bike delivered. The company typically has to order freight shipping which has a hefty price tag on it. Due to this shipping to Alaska and Hawaii comes with a hefty price tag.

shipping by freight

There are some ways around this, for example, if the battery meets very strict requirements, the company may be able to ship them by air. However, most electric bike companies either don’t meet these requirements or haven’t gone through the certification process that will allow them to ship via air.

From my research, there are only a handful of companies that offer to ship to Alaska and Hawaii. I will list them below. Even though there are a few companies that offer to ship to these areas, you have to decide if it’s worth the extra cost.

If you’re paying $5,000 for an e-bike then that might not be too much but if you’re buying a more basic electric bike for around $1,000 paying $500 on top of that for shipping is crazy you’re almost buying another e-bike at that point.

Himiway, Emojo, Fifield, UBCO, and Delfast are more city riding or all-around e-bikes while the other bikes are more in the hunting and offroading niche.

Conclusion

E-Bike companies can’t ship bikes to these states because in most cases that would require air transit. The lithium-ion batteries on e-bikes are unable to go on planes due to the risk of combustion.

Over time, e-bike companies may have better means for shipping electric bikes to Alaska and Hawaii but right now their main method for shipping to those States is freight. Freight is very expensive and the bike companies forward that cost to you. So, if you don’t want to pay an exorbitant amount of money on shipping you’ll have to wait until eBike batteries get to the point where they can go on planes.
